Patient result access

Pathology Results Check Uganda

A WhatsApp-based result status checking model that helps patients confirm whether a pathology result is ready, while supporting laboratory follow-up for delayed or unmatched cases.

The problem with result follow-up

Many patients travel back to hospitals or call repeatedly simply to ask whether a pathology result is ready. This creates cost for patients, pressure on staff, and avoidable congestion.

In cancer pathways, delayed communication around diagnostic results can slow referral, staging, and treatment planning.

The digital status-check model

A patient sends a lab number through WhatsApp. The system checks result status from the laboratory workflow and returns a structured response.

If the result is not ready or not found, the case can be escalated internally for laboratory follow-up.

How it works

  • Patient sends a pathology lab number by WhatsApp.
  • The request is captured by a webhook.
  • The system checks result readiness in the laboratory workflow.
  • Ready results trigger a patient-facing status response.
  • Not-ready or not-found cases can trigger internal escalation.
  • Interactions can be timestamped to support audit and performance monitoring.

For patients

Reduces unnecessary return trips, uncertainty, and repeated calls.

For laboratories

Creates a cleaner route to detect pending, delayed, or not-found cases.

For health systems

Supports turnaround-time monitoring, escalation rates, and service improvement.

Why this matters for cancer diagnosis

Cancer diagnosis is not complete when a specimen is received. The result must be processed, reported, communicated, reviewed, and acted upon.

Possible expansion

  • Histology and cytology result readiness.
  • Microbiology culture result status.
  • PCR result readiness.
  • Radiology report readiness.
  • Blood bank crossmatch readiness.
