What same-day cytology means

Same-day cytology means that selected cytology samples can be prepared, reviewed, and reported within the same day where the sample is adequate and no additional tests are required.

• FNAC for breast lumps, thyroid nodules, lymph nodes, salivary lesions, and soft tissue swellings.
• Fluid cytology for submitted pleural, ascitic, cystic, and other fluids.
• Rapid guidance on whether further biopsy, referral, or additional testing is needed.

Why it matters for patients

Fast cytology can reduce anxiety, reduce repeated trips, and help clinicians decide whether a patient needs reassurance, repeat sampling, biopsy, imaging, referral, or specialist review.

Careful clinical limits

Not every case can be completed on the same day. Some samples are inadequate, some lesions require biopsy, and some cases require ancillary testing or specialist correlation.
